William Carey University Appoints Founding Dean of

Proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine

(CHICAGO)—Michael K. Murphy, D.O., has been appointed as founding dean and vice president of academic affairs at the proposed college of osteopathic medicine at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss.  He will begin working at the school January 15.

Dr. Murphy previously served as associate dean for clinical sciences and associate dean for post-graduate education at the Pikeville (Ky.) College School of Osteopathic Medicine (PCSOM).

“I am honored to have this opportunity to address the medical care shortage in this region by helping to create the first college of osteopathic medicine in Mississippi,” said Dr. Murphy.  “Osteopathic medical education’s focus on preventive medicine and treating the whole patient will help to provide the best possible medical care for the people of the Gulf states.”

After a distinguished thirty-year military career in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Murphy accepted the position of dean of the Des Moines (Iowa) University— College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998 before joining PCSOM as a professor in family medicine.

The American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) awarded him a fellowship in 2000 and he became a distinguished fellow in 2007. He is also a fellow of the Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators.

In addition, Dr. Murphy has been a member of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) since 1969 and served as first vice president, second vice president and AOA trustee from 1991 until 1999.  In 2006 he returned to the AOA Board of Trustees as third vice president and continues to serve on the board as a trustee.

After earning his degree in 1973 from the A.T. Still University- Kirksville (Mo.) College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Murphy completed an internship and residency in family practice at Navy Hospital Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) proudly represents its professional family of more than 61,000 osteopathic physicians (D.O.s); promotes public health; encourages scientific research; serves as the primary certifying body for D.O.s; is the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical colleges; and has federal authority to accredit hospitals and other health care facilities.  More information on D.O.s/osteopathic medicine can be found at www.osteopathic.org.
